FPGA Firmware Engineer

We are currently seeking an FPGA Firmware Engineer.

As an UrtheCast FPGA Firmware Engineer, you will participate in the design of our next-generation Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload. Though the role focuses on FPGA firmware design, the ideal candidates will be versatile, with experience in the electronics, logic design, digital signal processing, and embedded software aspects of large FPGA-centric projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Complete the detailed design, implementation, integration, and testing of FPGA firmware
  • Generate the system-level design, including partitioning of computational workloads across different resources
  • Perform code reviews, design documentation, and mentorship activities
  • Contribute to the design of embedded software and hardware platforms

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Engineering Physics
  • 5 years of FPGA firmware design and implementation

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

  • A veteran FPGA designer (Xilinx / VHDL preferred)
  • Comfortable with embedded software (preferably assembly/C for ARM CPUs)
  • Familiar with low-level interfaces (JTAG, RS232, CAN BUS, SPI, I2C, 1-wire)
  • Able to participate in system-level design
  • A strong verbal and written communicator
  • Familiar with modern source-code management (Git)
  • Familiar with developing and conducting tests of embedded firmware designs

Bonus:

  • Familiarity with a high-level language (e.g. Python)
  • Experience with schematics and hardware design and manufacture
  • RTOS or embedded OS experience (Linux, FreeRTOS)
  • Ability to participate in electronic design programs (schematic capture, bring-up, debugging)
  • Knowledge of high-speed interfaces (Ethernet, XAUI, Aurora, Interlaken, PCI)
  • Familiarity with digital signal processing theory and practice (FFT, DUC/DDC) 
  • Experience in space or aerospace environments
  • Experience with Synthetic Aperture RADAR (SAR)
