Software Engineer

This type of large-scale change requires near-constant technological iteration and innovation, so UrtheCast continues to initiate unprecedented engineering programs like its planned UrtheDaily™ and OptiSAR™ constellations. Every day, we push the limits of what’s possible in space-based Earth Observation.

We are currently seeking a Software Engineer.

As an UrtheCast Software Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing and testing geospatial software algorithms and infrastructure to be used within the UrtheCast Ground Systems.  This position will also support the Senior Technical Manager in upgrading prototypes to production systems, developing and implementing refactoring strategies, and producing or updating the corresponding system documentation.


  • Design, implement, test, and debug Ground Segment systems and software
  • Code review and merge new features and test bug fixes to integration and production environments and monitor and execute server deployments
  • Support the discovery of requirements for the Ground Segment
  • Support the management of the sprint work across all systems
  • Support the verification of new functionality and bug fixed across all systems
  • Participate in project strategy and product roadmap meetings


  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent (Master’s preferred)
  • 3-5 years of experience developing software with proven track record of delivering complex systems delivering mission critical projects
  • Experience in asynchronous messaging technology and systems
  • Experience working in Agile (Scrum, XP) iterative frameworks
  • Experience with advanced shell scripting, Unix and AWS environments
  • Strong experience in database design and implementation
  • Experience with Digital Signal Processing algorithms a plus


  • Expert knowledge in Python (including numpy)
  • Exceptional software system design and object-oriented coding skills
  • Expert knowledge in software systems architecture concepts and patterns
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage and execute with minimal supervision
  • Ability to take initiative and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Knowledge of Javascript, Angular.js and Node.js an asset
